Buck Owens (Alvis Edgar Owens Jr., August 12, 1929 , in Sherman , Texas – March 25 , 2006 , Bakersfield ) was an American country music artist and singer, songwriter , music executive , and pioneer of the Bakersfield Sound . He was also the discoverer and manager of Susan Raye , who had global success with LA International Airport and with whom he formed a successful duo in the early 1970s.
